Information security, privacy, and governance
Michael Esola
Michael Esola is a security and privacy practitioner working across governance, risk, and compliance, data protection, security operations, and offensive testing.
His work spans security program management, privacy and information governance, cloud security and audit, digital forensics, and physical and electronic penetration testing. He owns Defensive Cyber LLC, where he designs and builds assessment hardware — including WASSUP, a handheld passive wireless survey tool.

Governance at the Speed of Autonomy
The cybersecurity and data privacy playbook for implementing governance, risk management, and compliance for artificial intelligence and agentic AI.
AI systems now act on their own initiative, at a pace the usual review cycles were never built to match. This book is a practical guide to governing them anyway — written for the security, privacy, and risk practitioners who have to make AI adoption defensible rather than merely permitted.
It introduces the CORE framework: Context, Oversight, Responsibility, and Elasticity. Read the framework →
Ask me about itWASSUP
Wireless Assessment Security Standards Utility Program
A handheld passive wireless reconnaissance device, designed and built by Michael Esola at Defensive Cyber LLC, for ISSM and ISSO wireless security assessments. It discovers Wi-Fi access points and clients across 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz, finds nearby Bluetooth devices, and turns what it observes into evidence an assessor can actually file.
Everything it does is passive: it listens, it never injects, deauthenticates, or associates. Findings export as CSV and JSON, or as a branded assessment report with RMF control blocks aligned to eMASS — each one carrying a suggested status plus a blank determination and signature line, because the tool proposes and the assessor decides.
Read the user guide- Built by Michael Esola, Defensive Cyber LLC
- Bands 2.4 / 5 / 6 GHz, plus Bluetooth LE and Classic
- Radios Two adapters in monitor mode on four antennas, plus the onboard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
- Platform Raspberry Pi in a sealed field case, touchscreen in the lid
- Ports USB-A, HDMI, USB-C charging
- Power Internal battery with live per-cell monitoring and automatic safe shutdown
- Output CSV and JSON exports, or a .docx assessment report
- Status Version 1, feature complete

What it does in the field
- Access point and client discovery across all three bands at once
- Focused Scan parks a radio on one channel to catch idle clients a hopping scan misses
- Watchlist alerting raises a pinned banner when an imported asset is seen
- Rogue and evil-twin heuristics flag an SSID appearing across mismatched vendors
- Bluetooth vendor identification by OUI and by manufacturer-data broadcast
- Passive device inference from probe requests, reported as a lead rather than a fact
- Assessment reports covering AC-18, CA-7, CA-8, RA-5, SC-40, and SI-4
- Onboard uplink for emailing results, including guest portal sign-in
The device gates every boot behind an acceptable use policy that has to be read through and acknowledged, and behind confirmation of the local time zone, so no assessment starts without an authorization record and correct timestamps.
Other things I've built
Two browser apps that run entirely on your own device. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored on a server.
Blueprint Exam Simulator
Upload a certification blueprint and a practice question bank, and it maps each question to the right domain, runs timed or untimed sessions, and tracks readiness per domain across every attempt. Missed questions export as a print-ready PDF you can study from or feed back in as a fresh bank.
The Back Bar
A home bar inventory that tells you what you can actually pour tonight. Build a shelf by barcode, photo label, or name, pull recipes from a public cocktail database, and get a shopping list of what you're one or two bottles away from making.
Certifications
More than sixty industry certifications, fifty-three of them independently verifiable through Credly. Every credential below with a link opens its verification page — the badge images alone prove nothing, so the links are the point.
Artificial intelligence
Five AI-specific credentials from four certifying bodies, covering the security, audit, governance, and management-system sides of the same problem the book addresses.
Alongside AIGP — Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional from the IAPP, and ISO/IEC 42001:2023 Lead Implementer, the management-system standard for AI.
